Ser y Estar is an intimate and eclectic journey through identity, love, loneliness, suffering, responsibility, and acceptance.

Across seven songs, Frank Rhodes explores where the personal becomes universal: the fear of being alone, the desire to be loved, the struggle to be truly seen, the consequences of our choices, and the search for meaning amid everything we’ve been through.

The album begins with the feeling of finally stepping back into the world after spending too long alone. Surrounded by jazz, horns, piano, and the ghosts of old vices, Frank searches for those familiar “eyes”—a recurring image throughout the record—while confronting the parts of himself that might pull him back into the past.

From there, Ser y Estar moves through complicated love, toxic relationships, longing, mistrust, and the masks people sometimes wear to meet society's expectations. Volver captures the desperate pull between two people who cannot seem to live together or apart, while For You turns that tension into hard rock, confronting the uncertainty of whether someone is truly present or simply along for the ride.

Out of Place strips everything down to a solitary acoustic guitar, creating a moment of vulnerability and reflection.

The title track, Ser y Estar, expands that introspection into something much larger: a lush orchestral composition that becomes the emotional center of the album. The title itself reflects the tension between being and existing in a particular state—between who we fundamentally are and whom we become through the circumstances of our lives.

La Catedral continues the search for truth through suffering, trauma, and experience. It becomes a spiritual journey toward surrender: the realization that, somewhere beyond the struggle, there may be a guiding light, a higher power, or simply the voice that reminds us we matter, we belong, and we are worthy of being held.

Finally, Olvídalo reaches back across fifteen years, using vocals recorded when Frank was around thirty and bringing them into the album he created at forty-five. The song becomes a conversation between past and present—a reminder that melancholy can become a place we live in if we refuse to let go. Its message is simple but difficult: the past happened, but it does not have to define the present.

Although the music moves through jazz, balladry, hard rock, acoustic folk, orchestral music, and spiritual reflection, the emotional thread remains constant.

Ser y Estar is ultimately about the human need to be seen, accepted, and understood.

It is Frank Rhodes saying to the listener:

You are not the only one going through this.

The loneliness, the mistakes, the longing, the need for acceptance, the search for truth, the feeling of being out of place, the struggle to understand who we are—all of it is part of being human.

And Frank isn’t speaking from outside that experience. He is standing inside it with the listener.

Ser y Estar is not about having all the answers.

It is about learning to accept that we are still becoming.
